A yet to be identified man was found dead with head injuries and bleeding from the mouth near Gweru River along the Gweru-Harare highway, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has said.
The victim was last seen alive at Regina Mundi High School the school`s staff cottages on Monday night where he was seeking assistance and narrated that he had been assaulted by three men who had offered him a lift to Harare, according to the police.
The police say their investigations have revealed that the three men, who were driving a Mercedes Benz, decided to rob him of his money and assaulted him in the process.
“ZRP confirms receiving a case of murder which occurred along the Gweru-Harare Road near Regina Mundi where the body of an unknown man was found lying about 4 metres from the road with injuries on the head and bleeding from the mouth. Circumstances gathered so far are that the man was last seen alive seeking assistance at Regina Mundi staff cottages on 21 March 2022 at about 1100 hours,” according to ZRP Midlands Provincial spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko.
He added: “He had a narration that he had dropped in Gweru from Beitbridge on his way to attend a funeral in Harare. He boarded a Mercedes Benz motor vehicle which had three male occupants including the driver.”
While, on the way, the driver of the Mercedes Benz stopped the vehicle alleging that the car had developed a mechanical fault, according to Insp Mahoko.
“They asked him to pay a fare of $1 saying they were no longer going to Harare. When he took out his wallet, they saw that he had a substantial amount of cash in US dollars and they started assaulting him using an unidentified object,” he added.
Insp Mahoko said the victim managed to escape from the vehicle at slept at Gweru River for the night, adding that he was wearing a pair of jean trousers, a black and white T-shirt, a gray jacket, and pair of grey and orange takkies.
Inspector Mahoko appealed to any member of the public who has information about the case to come forward.
The body of the deceased was taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital pending a post mortem.
