1 Mins read

A new irrigation scheme in Chirumhanzu South has transformed the lives of the local community, which has started benefitting from the proceeds of its farming activities.

The Chirumhanzu South E Irrigation Scheme, which is located in Ward 6 of the district, was established last year, and supports…. farmers. Currently, the irrigation farmers are involved in aquaculture projects, which according to the ward`s councillor Winnie Dzingira, have transformed people`s livelihoods for the better.

“We can now put money in our pockets, we can take our children to school and improving our lives through these projects,” Dzingira said. “We want to applaud the government for establishing the community irrigation scheme because it is an initiative that seeks to emancipate the livelihoods of the community’” she added.

She said that the irrigation scheme contained fish ponds where they were growing fish for sale.

“Back then if someone wanted to buy fish, they would go to Kariba but now it’s no longer necessary for that person because we now have our own Kariba here in Chirumhanzu where we do fish breeding for farmers who want to do fish farming. We would to express our gratitude to President (Emmerson) Mnangagwa and Honourable (Barbra) Rwodzi for improving our livelihoods.”
