Counterfeit money syndicate on the prey in Midlands

1 Mins read

A syndicate of criminals is targeting unsuspecting traders and businesses in Midlands Province where they buy using counterfeit United States dollar notes, the police have said.

The syndicate, which drives a Grey Toyota Fortuner with registration plates AEN 7998, has already pounced on some businesses in Redcliff and Kwekwe.

Zimbabwe Republic Police Kwekwe District Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ludiah Shanje said, “Let’s ascertain that the notes we have been handed are genuine before we offer our services. Right now, there are some places in Redcliff and Kwekwe where criminals driving a Toyota Fortuner, which is grey in colour and has registration plates AEN 7998, have defrauded people.

She added that the counterfeit money syndicate usually buys goods using US$50 and US$100notes.

“We want to warn you that there are criminals going around with fake US$50 and US$100 denominations targeting shops, fuel stations and informal traders. We should be cautious about the people that we sell to, especially those with big denominations like 100 and 50 (US dollars), she said.” Shanje encouraged the public to report the vehicle to the nearest police
